Nirjala Ekadashi is also called as Bhimaseni Ekadashi, Bhima Ekadashi and Pandava Ekadashi in different part of India by the Hindus. The date of Nirjala Ekadashi is decided by the lunar calendar. On this auspicious day, devotees indulge in religious rituals and prayers including special puja to Lord Vishnu. Nirjala Ekadashi falls on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi) of the waxing fortnight of the Hindu month of Jyestha as per the Hindu religious calendar and in the month of June as per the Georgian calendar. It is a holy day for the Hindus. In Sanskrit language, the term Nir-Jala means without water. Therefore people observe fasting without a single drop of water on this auspicious day with great dedication and devotion. Among the Ekadashis, Nirjala Ekadashi is regarded as most sacred of ekadashis. Nirjala Ekadashi plays a significant role in the religious life of the Hindus. According to the Hindu religious scholars and pundits, those who observe the Nirjala Ekadashi will get the most granting and rewarding the virtue that are wholeheartedly gained by the observance of all 24 ekadshis in the year. Therefore devotees give prime importance to Nirjala Ekadashi. Nirjala Ekadashi is also locally called as Pandava Bhima Ekadashi. This particular name is largely derived from Bhima who is the second and strongest of the five Pandava brothers, heroes of the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Moreover, the interesting story behind the Nirjala Ekadashi vrata vow is largely narrated in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana. According to the local legends, Bhima is known as a lover of food. He was advised by sage Vyasa to observe the Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat for an absolute fast. It is to be remembered that Bhima was unable to observe fast on the normal Ekadashi days and he compensated it by perform a wholehearted fasting with perfection on the Nirjala Ekadashi day.
