No matter where kids live, even in a high-poverty area, having effective parents can reduce the lure of gangs, delinquency, drug use and street crime. Fact. Criminologists link parental efficacy and effectiveness to higher self-esteem and lower crime rates. We see this everyday at work. The more positively involved the parent(s) the brighter future for the child. Be there for your kids. Love them gently. And love them tuff. Give them freedom but dont be afraid to be a hardass when you need to be. Balance. As a parent I straddle the fence each day being strict disciplinarian and at the same time nurturing mom who loves to spoil her baby. Being nurturing mom though also means I be that disciplinarian that raises a child who knows his boundaries, recognizes when he does something wrong, can own up to his faults, learns from his mistakes, gives respect to others, and can make the right decision even when Im not immediately there to guide him. Be there for your kids. A little bit goes along way. And to those parents who are there for their babies, keep striving. Parenting is no easy thing, but raising respectful kids who will add positive to this world makes it all worth it!
