No wild animals are safe. People keep coming up with uses for their body parts that defy logic. Wildlife experts fear spurt in poaching crimes Chinmayi Shalya, TNN | Jul 31, 2013, 07.08 PM IST MUMBAI: Poaching of tigers and leopards in India seem to be growing by the year. Wildlife experts said that in 2013, India has already lost 19 tigers and 57 leopards. In 2012, the country had lost 31 tigers and 137 leopards. There is a strong likelihood that the number of tigers lost to poaching is more than last year. Experts said that while poaching is a widely known reality, the action taken to mitigate it is negligible. "The usual problems while dealing with poaching threat are that the state governments are usually in denial mode about the fact that poachers are active in their state. Secondly, there is a lack of effective strategy and mechanism at the state level to deal with the local and outside poachers separately, besides, there are also shortcomings at the state level like disregard of advisories, weak linkage with expertise available with NTCA, Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), limited or no sharing / coordination among the states," said Kishore Rithe, member National Board of Wildlife. Rithe said that active action to stop poaching has to be taken. The conviction, if caught, also has to be speedy to set a precedent for other poachers, he added.
