November 7 The Fellowship of Worms Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaint. 1 Peter 4:8,9, NASB Jonathan Edwards was used mightily of God to help usher in the first Great Awakening of the 1700s. Most Christians, upon hearing his name, immediately think of his sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” Not all of his sermons are so harsh, but I thank God that he did not hesitate to feed this nation the full gospel. Look at his handling on the subject of how Christians should treat one another: Christians, that are but fellow worms, ought at least to treat one another with as much humility and gentleness as Christ, who is infinitely above them, treats them. But how did Christ treat His disciples when they were so cold towards Him and so regardless of Him when His soul was exceeding sorrowful even unto death? He in a dismal agony was crying and sweating blood for them, and they would not watch with Him and allow Him the comfort of their company one hour in His great distress. One would think that was a proper time if ever to have reproved them for a devilish, hellish, cursed and damned slothfulness and deadness. But after what manner does Christ reprove them? Behold His astonishing gentleness! He says, “What, could ye not watch with me one hour? The spirit indeed is willing but the flesh is weak.” As you go through your day today, how humble, gentle and Christ-like will you be in the face of disappointment and irritation? A good tip: When we remember that we are all in the “fellowship of worms,” it becomes much easier to maintain that necessary humility and gentleness. 2 Kings 20; Hebrews 2; Hosea 13; Psalms 137–138
