November brings thoughts of Thanksgiving (turkey, football, lots - TopicsExpress

November brings thoughts of Thanksgiving (turkey, football, lots of desserts, Black Friday, and family). We follow the tradition of Thanksgiving, not because most of us have actually researched it, but because it is a habit that has been passed down from generation to generation. However, all habits can be broken. A habit: a settled or regular tendency or practice, esp. one that is hard to give up. Hard to give up doesnt mean impossible to give up. It just means effort is needed to break the cycle. For most people, there needs to be a clear reason to break a habit...some benefit or consequence. For me, Thanksgiving always brings back memories of my mother and her baking and preparing food for days. I continued the tradition with my children as they were growing up never really giving enough thought to how we came to believe in the Thanksgiving holiday in the first place. While Ive always been a person who was open to personal growth, this year has really been a big year for me as far as assessing my habits and how they have affected who and where I am now. On this first day of November, I have made the decision to break a life long habit. I will no longer view Thanksgiving as a day of celebration. Going back to its origins, it should not be a day of celebration. For Americans, it should be a dark day in our history for it shows how badly the Native Americans were treated. These were fellow human beings and they are and have been treated with disrespect and distain simply because they were different. Reevaluate your habits. Why do you have them? Who do they serve? Who do they hurt? huffingtonpost/richard-greener/the-true-story-of-thanksg_b_788436.html
