Now I have lived in quite a few countries in my lifetime: England, Scotland, France, Lithuania, of course and the USA. Yet the only country where you are bombarded with unsolicited phone calls every evening is the USA. You get calls from robots, insurance salesmen, car warranty sales, scammers (threatening you to collect taxes, or suggesting you’ve just won the lottery) and of course the fundraisers. I am having fun with all of the calls, really, and I am very eager to answer them. That’s a very good way to talk to people and make new friends. This comes as a surprise to the callers usually, cause they have different expectations and mostly handle people annoyed by their calls. There’s much fun to be had to persuade the caller that his product actually is overpriced and basically sucks, or to get the robot caller to admit that he/ she/ it is a robot. I will definitely record one of those, as soon as the robots will call me again. They are so sophisticated nowadays. But the hardest bit for me used to be professional fundraisers. I mean, how can you resist the urge to help someone: state troopers, injured police officers or disabled people. Most professional fundraisers use Bob Cialdini influence tactics, for instance, they bombard the listener with a one way tirade, suggesting that he is about to get a sticker in the mail soon which would show his support for X, (reciprocation principle) and then make the listener choose the donation amount: $20 $40 $ 60 or more (Illusion Of Choice). I must admit- initially these fundraisers would get me right away, and I have been a “proud” State Trooper Association supporter in 2009 and 2010. But then I’ve checked the fundraisers: what part of the money collected actually goes to the Officers? Unbelievable: 20-30 per cent at the most. The rest of the money goes to fundraisers themselves. Wow. That’s quite a business opportunity, don’t you say? Take a listen: how to end the phone call with “Community Services” with this very simple question.
