O.K. bit of resolve to be had now. I will stop scouring gumtree for a cheap running bike to get me through and concentrate on getting the GT550 G9 running again (and the XT500 too) Now, as you may know, I am limited in my abilities, but i do have a nicely designed 2nd edition copy of zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance and enough skill and confidence to take things to pieces with only minimal thread stripping. Thanks to everybody that answered any of my previous questions and forgive me for pouring my heart out again, but i think that I am going to need the hive intelligence of the group to make some headway.... So, to recap. The GT has been neglected for the last 20,000 or so, with little more than oil, filters and plugs being changed. It was starting to feel a little off (like a misfire, that wasnt quite a misfire...) then eventually a full on misfire. that was easily identified as number two cylinder. I checked the coils by swapping them around, with no difference, so that led me to the carbs, which I removed and cleaned out, checking diaphragms. This made no difference. I did put new leads on and tried swapping plugs around too. I admitted defeat and tracked down a mobile mechanic who professed a vast working knowledge of the GT (having run a courier fleet for several years) He confidently sent me off to work and said that all would be well by the time i returned, but sadly he was stumped too, he talked of checking and rechecking the carbs and came to the conclusion that the bushes for the butterflies were worn and allowing air through ( means nothing to me) The bike has 50,000 miles, if that helps the thought process... I paid him for his time (feeling a little robbed, but he did seem genuine in his research and he checked lots of connections etc...) Onwards we go then, the bike is on a friends driveway in South East London under a tarp with plenty of room around it, so its going th be a question of little and often to get her going.. When i fire it up to run on three cylinders, it does sound a bit rattely too. Could valve clearances have shifted enough to stop it firing on that cylinder? Feel free to jump aboard...or if anybody nearby wants a challenge?..
