OAU is forever, a great citadel of learning... My alma matter, - TopicsExpress

OAU is forever, a great citadel of learning... My alma matter, is forever a great citadel of intellectualism, innovatism, and every other positivism devoid of barbarism, as been displayed today by some few focusless students. Obafemi Awolowo University, established on the soil of the cradle of Yoruba race, Ile-Ife, is a tertiary institution well known across the globe for its characteristic impacting of knowledge and moral values to the younger generation right from its inception; as its motto is: For Learning and Culture. Hence, the popular acronym Great Ife. But, what can we call greatness in an obvious display of contumacious act with exuberance on the part of some restless students? Infact, I could not hide my dismay over the manner in which some rampaging OAU students today; just to show that they were against the visit of Mr. President to the campus. Barricades were mounted, the major roads on the campus were made inaccessible to anybody in the protest over what they perceived to be paralyses of their academic activities courtesy of President GEJ visitation to the school. Here are my pertinent questions begging for answers from those irrational students: should we say the school management erred by allowing Mr. President to come to OAU? Even if activities on campus were grounded, did the protest improve the situation or worsen it? Can two wrongs ever make a right? I have no apology to state it unequivocally that; OAU aluta of yesteryears were often radicalism-based and not for undue display of rascality as it played out today, Friday, November 28, 2014. My surprise is that these same idiots- who often call themselves students unionists or activists would still be those behind the windows collecting gana-must-go from politicians when it is the time of elections; in the name of mobilizing votes of their fellow students. As a student of history, I could remember that Baba Obasanjo once visited OAU during the era of SUG leadership of Mr. Fakama. Baba was almost stampeded by the mass of OAU students but was eventually given a soft-laden courtesy of the wisdom employed by Fakama. In the long run, Fakama was later made an adviser to President Obasanjo. Assuming the crises on that day claimed the lives of some students, it might have not prevented Baba Obasanjo from becoming Nigeria President then. An average student of OAU ought to be reasonable enough to realise the fact that;most of those their leaders know how they do hob-nob with those politicians and those at the corridors of power. The Innocent students are just like the tools they use to spread their wings and tentacles so that their negotiations with their paymasters can soar. Never in my life would I turn myself to a political marauders! And Intellectual sycophancy does not best describe bonafide great Ife students. On the path of genuine, issue-based activism OAU students should continue to tow. My candid advise for Mr. President is to continue to be focus, be more proactive, steadfast and decisive at this material time; when various forms of political permutations and combinations seem to be the norms among the gladiators. This is because, if a snake fails to its venom, children will use it as a rope to tie firewood. Keep pushing President GEJ, uneasiness bears the head that wears a crown, but there is always light at the end of every tunnel. Those that are in support of your leadership multiply those that are against you. Hence, it is my fervent believe that you will captain the ship of this our great nation to a higher altitude.
