OH baby is it cold outside! Our friends at AEP and Columbia Gas offer some tips on how to stay warm and protect your home during this extended cold snap. If using a space heater, be sure to keep it at least 3 feet from anything that can burn, including walls. Remember to unplug it before leaving the room and when going to bed. Never ever use an extension cord and never put anything on top of the cord as this could cause the cord to over heat and catch fire. Prevent pipes from freezing by running a constant trickle of water. Open the kitchen and bathroom cabinets to let warm air flow circulate around the pipes. Keep garage doors closed if there are water lines in the garage. Install window insulator kits to cover entire windows with shrink wrap like material. These kits are inexpensive and are an effective way to stop air leaks. You can purchase them at many home improvement stores. Keep your thermostat set at 72 degrees or lower. This setting will help your furnace run at its optimal performance without adding any extra stress on it. As always, if youre having a problem, please call and report it immediately.
