OKLAHOMA CITY – Two Mustang educators’ classrooms have begun the new school year with new materials for exciting projects due to a local Credit Union program. Treva Parrish, teacher at Mustang High School and Rachel Richardson, teacher at Canyon Ridge Intermediate School, both received grant money from Oklahoma Educators Credit Union (OECU). Parrish, special education teacher at Mustang High School, plans to apply her grant funds toward purchasing graphing calculators for her Algebra 2 students. “My goals are to teach the students to use the calculators and gain enough mastery of the Algebra 2 material to pass the Algebra 2 End of Instruction test and for 100 percent of my students to pass that test,” Parrish said. Rachel Richardson, 6th grade special educators math teacher at Canyon Ridge Intermediate School, will apply her grant funds to focus on fractions/decimals/percents and organization. “With the requested funds, I plan to purchase hands-on manipulatives demonstrating in a tangible way, the use of fractions as well as some basic fraction books written for students with special education needs. I also plan to create an accountability based organization system for my students,” Richardson said. Each July, Oklahoma Educators Credit Union accepts grant applications from Oklahoma teachers who are OECU members. In 2014, over 100 applications were received and reviewed by its Grants Committee with 64 grants being awarded. “Oklahoma Educators Credit Union supports educators and their efforts to bring imaginative and innovative learning projects to their classrooms,” Cindy White, OECU President said. “That’s why we began our Teacher Grant Program – it’s our way to help Oklahoma teachers bring new projects to life.” The grants were awarded last week at OECU’s Teacher Grant Banquet held on the Reno campus of Francis Tuttle Technology Center in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma Educators Credit Union was founded in 1960 and for 54 years has been dedicated to serving the financial needs of educators and their families. OECU membership is open to educators, school personnel, school students and their families. The OECU Yukon Branch is located at 732 Garth Brooks Blvd. A complete list of 2014 Teacher Grant winners can be found at oecu. mustangps.org/
