ON THIS DAY - August 20, 1926 RICHMOND DEATH OF A GIRL. Murder Charge Fails. Before Mr Justice Mann, in the Criminal Court yesterday, John Pearce Carvosoe, of Edwarden street, Reservoir, a plumber in the employ of the Victorian Railways, was charged with having murdered his niece by marriage, Evelyn Selina Reach, aged 17 years and 3 months, at Richmond on August 20. Carvosoe pleaded not guilty. He was defended by Mr L. B. Cussen (instructed by Mr C. Barnett.) Mr. Book, who prosecuted for the Crown, said that the dead girl had lived with her aunt and uncle from October, 1924. The allegation was that Carvosoe took the girl to the house of Nurse Chamberlain at Abbotsford on August 17. In a statement Carvosoe said that he had arranged to pay Nurse Chamberlain £15- £10 in cash and £5 later. On August 20 Carvosoe said that he received a telephone message from Nurse Chamberlain. As a result he removed the girl to the Bethesda Hospital, Erin street, Richmond, where she died an hour after admittance, the cause of death being shock following an illegal operation. In a statement from the dock Carvosoe denied having had any intimacy with his niece. When being questioned by the police he had been kept without food for hours. He was informed that if he told what he knew. he would be required only as a witness. He was confused by the questioning, and he did not believe that he had made the statements attributed to him by the police. The jury found Carvosoe not guilty, and he was discharged.
