OT Electives Already a topic that has been bought to our attention on numerous occasions is that of electives. Before we make a few suggestions or share with you all what we have done it is important to determine what you are hoping to achieve from the elective; • Do you want a free hit? Something easy and simple? Without an exam? • Do you want to expand on your professional knowledge? • Do you want to do a health elective? Or would you prefer to branch out? • Do you have a specific area of interest that you wish to learn more about? • Do you want it to be on campus? Off-campus? Or online? • What year level electives are you required to complete? (be sure to check with the course requirements to ensure that you are on track for completing the right amount of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year level units) For example you can only complete two 1st year electives throughout the whole of your course. You are able to do 1st year electives during any of your studies, just ensure that you don’t do more than two of these. A good resource to determine the requirements for course completion is current course progress located through StudentConnect. • StudentConnect > View Course Progress > Click on Course Code H355 These are all important factors to consider before making your choice. We can only provide you with some information regarding the electives that we have chosen however there are other sources of information that we have used to gather appropriate information; • Wendy Campbell - Wendy Campbell is an Administrative Officer for the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy program based at the Waterfront Campus. - a point of contact for students studying courses within the School, including the provision of course enrolment and re-enrolment advice; graduations, variations, transfers and advanced standing; - assistance and support for academic staff in relation to teaching, timetabling and promotional events. Wendy works part-time on Monday, Thursday and Friday weekly and is located in building D, level 3, room 326. • The unit handbook - deakin.edu.au/students/university-handbook/2014 This is a tool that will be helpful once you have determined a few electives that attract your interest and need to shorten this list down. It provides you with all the relevant unit requirements, assignment information and exam expectations. The following are electives that we have participated in that you could consider for the next few years; Year level 1 equivalent electives: HSN101 - FOOD: NUTRITION, CULTURE AND INNOVATION Year level 2 equivalent electives: HSN201 - PRINCIPLES OF NUTRITION ASC206 - SOCIOLOGY OF HEALTH Year level 3 equivalent electives: HBS300 - ETHICS: FRAMEWORKS AND DECISIONS HDS310 - HUMAN RIGHTS AND ADVOCACY HSE313- UNDERSTANDING CHILDREN’S PHYSICAL ACTIVITY HDS301 – THE EFFECTIVE PRACTITIONER ** We have completed a few other electives such as HBS345 and HSO307, however these are now core units. If you want any specific information regarding these electives we are happy to answer questions!! We just thought we would provide you with a few options and you can have a browse at them through the unit handbook or just ask us. Post questions because I have no doubt, other Mens Shed brothers will be wanting to know the same thing.
