Obituary for Phyllis Starling Phyllis Ann Starling, longtime Carney, Oklahoma resident, went to be with her Lord and Savior October 11th after a courageous battle against kidney disease. She died at home surrounded by her loved ones. She was 70 years old. A celebration of her life will be Friday, October 17th, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Carney. Interment at Carney Cemetery will follow. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. She was born January 10, 1944 in Carney, Oklahoma to James Wilber and Freida (Sipe) Smith. She was the second of ten children. Phyllis met the love of her life, Don Starling, while attending Carney High School. They graduated together in 1962 and were married in August of that same year. Two years later they were blessed with their son Danny Ray, who preceded her in death in 1999. Daughter Tammy Ann was born in 1966 and currently resides in Champaign, IL with her husband Chris. Phyllis was a member of the First Baptist Church for over 50 years. She was a nurturer and role model to all with whom she came in contact - from the children she taught in Sunday School to the students in Danny’s and Tammy’s classrooms where she was always a homeroom mom and class sponsor.She was a gifted seamstress, cook, and crafter, avid reader and photographer. Throughout their 52 years of marriage, she was the epitome of a helpmate to Don. They traveled together through every avenue of work, play and parenthood as a single unit, led by their faithful and unwavering devotion to each other and to Jesus Christ. She was preceded in death by son, Danny Ray; her parents, Wid and Freida Smith; three brothers – Larry Eugene Smith, Donnie Smith, and Terry Smith; and one sister, Jane Griffith. Phyllis is survived by her husband, Don; daughter, Tammy Hoisington and her husband, Chris; daughter-in-law, Angi Starling; grandchildren–Charlie and his wife, Mattie, Tyler, Haylie and her husband, Chase, Nick and Alex; and one great-grandson, Camden; three brothers and their spouses: Wilmer and Rosa Smith, Danny and Louise Smith, James and Liz Smith; three sisters: Patty Harris and husband Gary, Sandy Dale, and Debbie Jarvis; brother-in-law, Dennis Griffith; sisters-in-law: Carolyn Smith-Sellers and Lori Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.
