Object of the week time again! This weeks object is a Rand McNally - TopicsExpress

Object of the week time again! This weeks object is a Rand McNally globe from about 1936. There was quite a bit of sleuthing to determine the age of this globe. At first we thought it was a globe from immediately after World War I because it showed Finland and Poland, two countries that did not appear on pre-World War I globes. However, this globe also shows Leningrad, the former St. Petersburg, Russia that was renamed in 1924. And it shows Italian East Africa, which wasnt created until 1936, as well as British Somaliland, a British colony invaded by Italy in 1940. The globe shows the world just before World War II, the Cold War, and post-WWII independence movements changed who controlled nations as well as the shape of those nations. Last Friday, mapmakers wondered if they would have to redraw the boundaries of the United Kingdom, but the Scottish Referendum went down in defeat. Do you have a globe from an earlier time, like one that shows the Soviet Union, or Siam, or going even further back, the Ottoman Empire?
