Observation.... Yesterday, as I started to work, I decided to stop by a store to pick up something. I went into the store, didnt find what I was looking for and decided to go to the next store in the same shopping complex; all the while thinking about what time I needed to be at work and to not be late. As I got ready to pull out of my parking space, there was an elderly woman walking extremely slow, looking around everywhere except at me trying to pull out. In my haste, I decided to back up instead of going forward. I looked behind me and did not see a car directly behind me nor in the space next to it. I began to back out and tried to swing around and go forward without actually having to back into the street. I swung back too far and did not see a parked car in the 3rd parking space. I backed into the car! I immediately jumped out, ran back into the store and asked who was driving that particular car. The young lady at the register stated that she was and that it was her Moms car. I asked her to call the Police and her Mom and tell them what happened. I went back outside and moved my car (which was still running....with the key in the switch...which will be my next post...) and moved it back into a parking space. I tried to assess the damaged to the car I hit and quite honestly could not figure out, due to some many dents, scratches, bangs and bruises already in the car, what damage I actually did. I looked at mine and did not see any damage at all. In my mind, I thought, this car is older, pretty beat up and rough...they shouldnt worry about another little bump... Skipping ahead, when the Police arrived, the Officer SEEMED to have the same thoughts that I did and stated that he would take our statement, information and write up a report but he thought it might be that we could settle it ourselves without getting the insurance companies involved. Anyway, we talked about it and through the voice of WISDOM speaking in my ear, I made the decision to turn it in on the insurance. Now, I said all of that to say this... This is the same way we are sometimes....just because someone may already have some dents, scrapes, bumps and bruises, we feel it doesnt matter if we do something that adds to that. We see them as already damaged so what will one more little bump up mean? However, just like with the car, it doesnt matter what kind of shape the car was in, I still added more to it. And it wasnt mine to make a decision how much it affected the owner. You see, sometimes we are so callous and inconsiderate with our words, our attitudes, our disinterest, our indifference because we are okay and our car (our feelings, our bodies, our ego) wasnt damaged... not thinking about the other car (person) who may have sustained the damage. We make so much about ourselves and brush off how our words or actions may have affected the other person. As long as we are good we cant understand why they are so upset. Anyway, lets all just be more mindful of always trying to see how are words or actions can be detrimental to others. Lets say Im sorry and mean it. Lets not try to excuse ourselves from any thing that makes another person feel bad, hurt, disappointed, discouraged, etc...whether you feel it is valid or not; It is not up to us to decide how the other person feels. Listen, it does matter how you treat others...whether they are already damaged goods or not....Yes, your dent does add to it! Be more mindful...just as you would want someone to do for you! More to come....I got about 3 more observations out of this situation!
