Observations - CAT 2014 Mock test provided on iimcat.ac.in 1. The test has 2 sections with 50 questions each. The distribution of the sections is as follows: 1. Section 1: Quantitative Aptitude (34) and Data Interpretation (16) 2. Section 2: Verbal Ability (34) and Logical Reasoning (16) 1. The directions mention that DI/LR may have sets/scenarios with 2 or 4 questions each even as the mock test has 4 sets of 4 questions each in DI and LR. Similarly the test has 16 questions in Reading Comprehension through 4 sets (with 3, 5, 4 and 4 questions per set) even as the directions mention that the test will have 4 questions per set. 2. The questions from various areas have been presented as a group – The first section has 34 quant questions followed by 16 DI based questions. Similarly, the second section has 16 LR based questions followed by 34 VA based questions. 3. There was a concern among the students (after the test day guide was made available on the iimcat website) if there would be negative marking for unattempted questions. The directions clearly indicate that there will be no negative marking for unattempted questions. Penalty for wrong answers stays but there is no clarity yet on the exact marks awarded for a right/wrong answer. 4. We would desist from drawing any interpretation regarding the composition of the test in terms of areas covered or the level of difficulty. For example, the test has a few questions from FIJ but that may mean nothing regarding the prospects of FIJ based questions in the actual test. 5. While the directions clearly at two different instances indicate that the questions will have only 4 options, some questions presented in the test do have 5 options as well. This could be because the questions from the mock test being taken for past CATs which had 5 options. Going by the instructions, CAT 2014 should have 4 options. 6. A few important obervations regarding the form of presentation of the test: 1. There is an option to view the entire paper in a sequential manner – rather than the single question view. This could be useful for the students to get a birds eye view of the entire test paper and form a plan accordingly. 2. Options for marking answers – mark for review & next, clear response and save & next - might take a while for the student to get used to. 3. One can look at the number of answered, unanswered, marked for review and not-viewed questions within a section by hovering over the section tabs. 4. Till last year, CAT has had the option of highlighting text within questions/directions. However, the mock test does not support highlighting. 5. Till last year, one could mark answers by clicking anywhere on an answer choice (and not only on the radio button) but this feature is not present in the mock test. 6. The intial versions of the test day guide had the option of an online caculator. While it has been removed in the current version of the file available on the cat website, the directions for the mock test also clearly indicate that use of calculators will not be permitted. In the end, please be advised that the above points are observations from the mock test only and the actual test may be significantly different from the same in form/design/content.
