October 30, 2014 - The Thursday Rant - Ebola Friends: According to Reuters, Monday Australia joined a host of African nations and issued a blanket ban on visas from Ebola-affected countries in West Africa to prevent the disease reaching the country. In our country President Obama still refuses to impose a travel ban and by the way, is it just me or is Nurse Kaci Hickox acting like a jerk? Hickox says, “I remain appalled,” over Ebola quarantines and threatens to sue. Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey said something like “Sue me? Sure, get in line.” Hickox says, “I feel like my basic human rights have been violated,” because she was quarantined after voluntarily going to Africa and treating Ebola patients. Governor Christie - “We brought her take out food!” All Americans have rights, not just Ms. Hickox. This is how Ebola works per wikipedia: “Signs and symptoms typically start between two days and three weeks after contracting the virus, with a fever, sore throat, muscle pain and headaches. Then, vomiting, diarrhea and rash usually follows, along with decreased function of the liver and kidneys. At this time, generally, some people begin to bleed both internally and externally. Death, if it occurs, is typically six to sixteen days after symptoms appear and is often due to low blood pressure from fluid loss.” “Of course we should help the infected people and countries, but we should be smart about it. Senator Pat Roberts said it best: “The cases of Ebola in the United States came to our shores on a plane from Liberia. West Africa is the source of this potential pandemic, and we should fight this virus there, at its source, not on our borders or in our airports,” Roberts said. President Obama, please wake up.
