Office of Family Life Did you know that according an economist from the University of Chicago, the most significant factor by far that accounted to the doubling of the divorce rate in one decade in the U.S. was the diffusion of contraception in society? Robert Michael, an economist from the University of Chicago, set out to analyze the possible causes of the dramatic doubling of the divorce rate that occurred in one decade—from 1965 to 1975—in the United States. After considering multiple causes, he determined that the most significant factor by far (> 50%) was the diffusion of contraception in society, due in large part to the advent of the Pill in 1960 and its widespread availability within a few years.
