Ohio is home to eight (potentially nine) different species of thoroughworts/bonesets (Eupatorium spp.). from the composite family (Asteraceae). a ways back several other fall-blooming species were included in the genus Eupatorium but have since been split out and placed in their own respective genera such as Ageratina (white snakeroot) , Conoclinium (mistflower), Eutrochium (joe-pye weed) and Fleischmannia (pink thoroughwort). the thoroughworts are some of my favorite fall wildflowers and Ive recently been spending time studying them in the field. collecting and pressing these species is the easiest way to study/show their differences and I thought a line-up comparison between eight different Ohio taxa would be fun. differences between species lie mostly in the leaves with all having white flowered inflorescences. starting on the left and moving right the species are: - E. serotinum (late-flowering thoroughwort) - E. perfoliatum (common boneset) - E. altissimum (tall thoroughwort) - E. sessilifolium (sessile-leaved thoroughwort) - E. pilosum (rough thoroughwort) *recently discovered in state* - E. rotundifolium (round-leaved thoroughwort) - E. album (white thoroughwort) - E. hyssopifolium (hyssop-leaved thoroughwort) *E. godreyanum (Godfreys thoroughwort) is not photographed and only currently known to occur at one site in Hocking county.
