On 15 October 2013 the U.S. Department of State issued a Security Message warning against a terrorist attack in the capital Kampala. The threat is purported to be a mass shooting style attack modeled after the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya by al-Shabaab on 21-24 September 2013. The U.S. Embassy in Kampala is working with local authorities in assessing the situation. There have been no specifics released as to the time of attack or intended target. Travelers should maintain situational awareness while in Uganda and report any suspicious activities to the local authorities.
