On January 7th, I lost my dearest friend MERLIN (aged 16 years) A loving soul I will never forget. I will miss him everyday. Adopted from RSPCA Burwood, (Australia) 11 years ago. Merlin was passed around before he found his forever home with my family. His early life is not documented, but what I do know, is that one adoptive family returned him because they were allegedly allergic to his fur, and the next family abandoned him at RSPCA because he allegedly barked at birds. He was listed to be euthanized, when my eldest daughter, a veterinary nurse, who had only worked at RSPCA a week, challenged the decision. After many submissions and a lot of to-do, he adopted me! Having previously had two Rough Collies over many years, it was a great honour to welcome another to my life. He was a gentle, sweet, loving companion who brought me so much joy over the years. My four children and two grandsons all adored him. Saying goodbye was perhaps the hardest thing I have done... it was evident that he didnt want to leave me, and God knows, I didnt want to let him go. He passed peacefully on the morning of Jan 7, and is interred on my daughters bush block at Cockatoo. We were so lucky to have him as long as we did. He was such a beautiful, affectionate boy. I will miss my shadow... he would always follow me around the garden and the house... but as soon as I sat down, he would lie at my feet or sit with his head in my lap. If I laid beside him, he would put his paw on my shoulder and stare lovingly into my eyes. He also loved to go for drives, even if it was only to the shops. If I didnt take him, he would sit at the front door, or at the side gate until I returned. He also knew when I was sad, and was a great comfort. My days will never be the same without him.
