On May 11, 1900, John Frey passed away. While few of you may know the Frey name, you are familiar with a monument thats dedicated to his memory. That monument is the granite structure that stands front and center in Vallejo City Park where it has stood for more than a century. The structure - once a working fountain - was dedicated to Frey - known as the Father of Vallejos Municipal Water System - on Memorial Day 1906. In 1892, Frey, a member of the citys board of trustees convinced Vallejo voters to approve a $250,000 bond to build the city’s own municipal water system. Prior to the passage of the bond, Vallejo relied on a privately owned - and problem plagued - water system developed by Anthony Chabot. Frey, a native of Germany, came to Vallejo in the early 1870s. The Vallejo Womens Improvement Club helped raise funds for the granite fountain.
