On Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at approximately 2:30 a.m., officers from the Alamogordo Police Department responded to Casa Arena Nursing Home located at 205 Moonglow in reference to a missing person report. The nursing home reported that William Buchanan, C/M/75 was discovered missing from the home during a resident bed check. An initial search of the area was conducted and Mr. Buchanan was placed into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) as a missing person. When the initial search to locate Mr. Buchanan was unsuccessful, the Alamogordo Police Department contacted the New Mexico State Police and the United States Border Patrol requesting their assistance in the search. The New Mexico State Police initiated a Silver Alert and provided the assistance of Search and Rescue Units from throughout the state to include units from Alamogordo, Chavez County, Cibola, White Mountain, Mesilla Valley and Socorro. Also participating in the search was the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol, Organ Mountain Technical Rescue Squad, the nursing staff and administration from Casa Arena, United States Border Patrol, New Mexico State Police, Alamogordo Police Department, Alamogordo Fire Department, and numerous local citizens. The search was suspended at 5:00 P.M. on Wednesday August 21, 2013 after the massive search produced no leads to his whereabouts. On Monday August 26, 2013 at approximately 9:50 A.M. Police Department personnel responded to the alley located behind 2000 E. First St. in reference to an unresponsive male subject found within overgrowth of bushes. Preliminary investigation led officers to believe that the subject was William Buchanan. The subject had bandages and other medical paraphernalia consistent with what Mr. Buchanan would have had on his person at the time he left the facility. APD did not receive any reports of unusual activity from anyone in the neighborhood prior to the discovery. The body of the deceased was tentatively identified as Mr. Buchanan. Next of kin has been notified.
