On another thread, M-it Wheelson asked: Is there any non anecdotal evidence that [CyclingSavvy offers] best practices? The short answer is no. The long answer: CyclingSavvy is new. In fact, we in St. Louis are pioneers. St. Louis was the first market to offer CyclingSavvy outside the state of Florida, where it began. A short three years later, CyclingSavvy has instructors in 18 states. Wherever we are, though, all CS instructors and students are pioneers, because we know that what we have discovered to be safest and best traffic cycling practices are not considered normal. Yet. “Whaddaya mean, it is ‘safest & best’ to take my place in traffic, like any other driver!?!” This is counterintuitive. It is a learned behavior—and there is a lot to learn! While we consider and respect ourselves as equals on the road, we know that we definitely are not the same. What CyclingSavvy so effectively conveys to cyclists is how our differences are in truth our strengths. The experience that unfolds in a CyclingSavvy workshop is revelatory. Once people have this knowledge and see for themselves how it works, they don’t turn back. It simply is so much easier to go anywhere! All those motorists who used to be nasty devils suddenly become cooperative angels :-) What we have now are the testimonials of hundreds of people who have taken CyclingSavvy. We also have thousands of hours of on-road video footage. Some of this we use, but most is typically discarded because it is thankfully so boring and uneventful. But a study with the imprimatur of a university or independent think tank? Not yet. Perhaps soon!
