On the anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti, i am driven to remember and ponder my experiences there. We arrived to bring relief the first week after the earthquake and what i saw there still haunts my dreams at times. On the other hand the outpouring of public support was overwhelming. Filterpure Filters, at this time partnered with Wine to Water to combine our resources and we built a much needed water filter factory. This was to be the most challenging task i had ever done. We had so many obstacles, corruption, technical constraints, heat and rains, that at times i lost heart. i wondered if there could be a future for Haiti. The one thing that kept ringing in my heart though, was the Haitian spirit. i have never seen such a tenacious culture. They handled the tragedy in a way that i couldnt comprehend. Walking down the streets of Port-Au-Prince right after the earthquake i saw families using rubble to rebuild their walls, and homes. i spoke to a woman who had her baby on the street the day after the earthquake and she was making a home for themselves. i met people every day, who just picked up and just kept going. Even in our own factory, when i thought it would be impossible and no one could make it work, Patrice Talleyrand came along and offered to help. Eventually he was to become the director and manager of the factory, bringing sustainability to the project that i was unable to bring. While the time i spent in Haiti for the two years after the earthquake was one of the most challenging and difficult times of my life, i am so proud to see our little factory still functioning and bringing clean water to the country. i am proud of our team and the work that we have done. https://youtube/watch?v=w3YK4bylJWU#t=13
