On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Malta, Ambassador Martin Valentino and Mrs Valentino hosted a reception on 28th September 2014 at the Tuwaiq Palace in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The reception was well attended by the members of the Diplomatic Corps and officials from the Saudi authorities, representatives of Saudi public entities and the private sector. The guest of honour was HRH Prince Turki bin Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Governor of Riyadh Province. Following the playing of the national anthems of Malta and Saudi Arabia, and a brief meeting with HRH Prince Turki, Ambassador Valentino gave a speech mentioning that this year Malta is celebrating four major events, its 50th Anniversary of Independence, 40 years since it was declared a Republic, the 35th anniversary of Freedom Day and the 10th anniversary as a Member State of the European Union and that in a relatively short span of time Malta has made huge strides forward and, though small in size, has managed to advance in many sectors to the benefit of its people. Ambassador Valentino recalled that the diplomatic relations between the Republic of Malta and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were established in 1975 and that an important highlight of these relations was the opening of the Embassy of Malta in Riyadh in 1985. The physical presence of the Embassy has considerably enhanced the political and trade relations between the two countries and there have been many political exchanges between both countries on various areas but remarked that there is still room and scope for more improvement in the bilateral relations for the benefit of both countries and their respective people. Ambassador Valentino then dwelt on the progress that Malta has achieved in important sectors of the economy such as in its maritime and aviation services, financial services, transhipment services, tourism, ICT, education and healthcare and advanced manufacturing and that currently the government is investing heavily in life sciences. These are some of the sectors in which Malta and Saudi Arabia should work together through business-to-business interaction and that both countries should seek opportunities of mutual investment for further growth and economic development. The Ambassador stated that Malta has earned its reputation as one of the most ideal locations for international companies to re-locate their business interests, offering a sound, cost and tax efficient jurisdiction, cost competitive skilled workforce, consistently highly ranked quality of life, secure and stable business environment, robust yet flexible legal and regulatory framework and acting as a hub from which to reach out to Europe, Africa and beyond. Malta is a country with an open market economy, good corporate climate, low inflation rate, low unemployment and an excellent track record.
