On this date, November 17, 1983, The Elvis Brothers were in Tuscon, AZ at the University of Arizona to open show number eight of the first Big Country Tour of the U.S.. We were already starting to find that we had a few advantages on this tour. One, we had the gift of gab with the audience where Big Country had such thick Scottish accents, they couldnt really talk to the audience that much. Sometimes, in person, it was hard to decipher their thick dialect, let alone through a loud sound system in a concert setting. It just didnt work for them to connect much with the audience. A time or two or three, during the tour, an amp or something would go out and there would be just awkward silence onstage while the problem was being fixed. They would try to talk to the crowd and the audience couldnt quite catch all they were saying. When that happened with us, that was perfect for us to connect and engage the audience by talking and joking around. Nothing sounds better than hearing a large crowd laugh at something you said. You know you gotem when that happens. The other advantage we had, was that we were starting to hear after the shows from people that we sounded great and our mix was way better than Big Country. The reason was, yes, we had a great sound man but also, they put a limit on how loud we could be and then they would come out and be so headliner loud, it was either painful or just sounded too loud for a good mix. So, what they thought would hinder us, ended up being a good thing. Everybody said we were just the right volume and you could hear everything we did perfectly. Then, they would come out and it would be uncomfortable loud. Score!!! Let this be a lesson to bands, that too loud doesnt mean bigger and better. So, on this night, which Im thinking mightve been one of those malfunction nights and we got to talk to the audience and connect with them. The gig book says we had an extra good show and....we played one encore. Our first encore as an opener! Tomorrow is another drive day for our gig the day after. This is day 36 on the road.
