On this proposed legislation to eliminate the Board of Trustees, - TopicsExpress

On this proposed legislation to eliminate the Board of Trustees, and regardless of any up-side to the proposal, Rutgers University has taken the stance that “it would violate the legislative contract contained in the Rutgers Act. Clearly, any changes to the governance of the University should be the product of a deliberative and considered process that involves stakeholders from the University.” Fundamentally, education and politics should be kept separate, particularly at an institution like Rutgers University, which proffer outstanding liberal arts and professional programs. To further politicize the governing body of the University would be to undermine the provision of a meaningfully open, honest, and neutral education that allows for exploration and nuanced approaches to study. In its place, this legislation would establish a hierarchically prioritizing, hyper bureaucratic, and adversarial governing scheme characterized by jockeying for funds, backdoor deals, and the marginalization and/or disenfranchisement of certain vulnerable groups within the University system. Additionally, stakeholders such as students, parents, University partners, faculty and staff, etc. should be included in the decision-making process. To not include the voices of these groups would ostensibly amount to disempowering us, and dictating the fates of all parties invested in the Rutgers University system, and the Rutgers brand. NJ legislators, please be responsible with the power and authority granted you all by the public, as yours are publicly funded and publicly vested positions. Do right by us, and do what is professionally and ethically correct: allow Rutgers University, its constituents, and its benefactors to determine our own fate. *Drops mic and exits stage right*
