Once again, Facebook asks me the wrong question: Whats on your mind? Whats been on my mind for most of the last week is What happens to a person when they discover that one of their basic beliefs, a belief that has formed their present identity, a belief that scripted their life story as told to themselves and others, a belief that has charted innumerable decisions good and bad, is NOT true? Well, for one, it makes them question what other beliefs that have become the building blocks of a lifetime, of an identity, may also not be true. Begin down that trail and, suddenly, one finds the whole of reality come crashing down around them. And thats scary. One also finds that if the motivations for most of the actions of their life is not real, one must change behaviors, thoughts, emotions, beliefs in order to live in the real. Thats scary. One also finds that staying in bed and zoning out on rotten movies like I Will Always Know What You Did Last Summer brings a sort of narcotic peace in a world that once again is scary, unpredictable, sad, and agitating. One finds that unbearable lightness of being. Of being, continually in freefall, hoping that, like a cat, one will land on its feet.
