One of my clients today gave me really good insight into how people see me. He said he thought I came from a rich middle class family with lots of money and only one child. He could not be farther from the truth. I am the oldest of 6 kids. I have been riased in domestic abuse. I have been arrested twice. I have had an eating disorder since I was 13. I have been homeless twice. I have lived in poverty. I have been without family and until recently friends for the last 10 years of my life. And after I told him these things, he called me a liar. I see now that I seem to others like an inexperienced princess, maybe even a brat. I see that I have to do a better job about educating the people around me about my life experiences so that they know when I am in a position where I choose to be opinionated, and vocal, that I am speaking from a genuine concern for myself, for my close friends, and to my community.
