One of the best known passages in the New Testament is 1 Corinthians 13 - the love chapter. Its read at a large proportion of weddings, and is quite likely to be the only scripture a number of people have ever read. Near the end of the chapter is a section that has helped me through some difficult times: 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. There is an idea there that I have certainly seen in my life. I have had prophetic words for people that have been very accurate, but not always in the way that I expected them to be. We often only know in part and see in part. But love remains! The revelation that I had about this is that as we go onto eternity, we take love with us. Any time we see people healed, or prophesy accurately, or change the atmosphere with out prayers it is very exciting. There have been times when Ive laid hands on and prayed for a non-believer on the street, and they have suddenly been filled with an awareness of God, and touched a peace that they never knew was possible. These are exciting things, but they will pass. But the love that we have grown in will last. It is important to chase knowledge and wisdom. It is good to grow in the gifts, and learn to be a blessing to the body. But these things are temporary. Love is eternal. Theres even a point where the degree to which we grow in love is the degree to which we get to know God. I implore you as Paul did : choose love, grow in love, make love your priority. Learn to love God, love people and love creation - it is the most excellent way!
