One of the best responses Ive seen regarding this issue. Teachers are under daily pressure from administrators, elected officials and parents all with vastly different agendas and opinions. Ive always been a supporter of tenure but I didnt realize, until last school year when Mr. B was in his first year of teaching (and in a charter school), how critical tenure is to the profession. As some of you know, this community was started because of my frustration over how my husband was treated. He had no advocate in the school. The principal was more concerned about her status in the community and with the board than with what was happening in the classroom (charter school in a small community can be a bad mix). It was heartbreaking to see him go from passionate to completely dejected. At one point he thought he made a huge mistake changing careers, cutting his salary by more than half, and spending $22,000 to get his credential and masters degree to do something he felt was more important.
