One of the biggest misconceptions about flexible dieters is that we dont care at all about our health. That couldnt be further from the truth. Rather, as flexible dieters, we understand that when it comes to achieving true fitness success, *psychology* is just as important as physiology. That means that, while 80-90% of our food choices tend to come from minimally processed, whole foods, we give ourselves the option (note: option!) to fill in the rest with treats, or junk food, or what have you. Its not because we dont know that chicken breast is healthier than a Snickers bar. And its certainly not because we dont care about the difference. Its give and take. If knowing that I have the freedom to eat a scoop of ice cream on occasion sans guilt can afford me mental sanity and keep me away from food obsessions and binge eating, then the choice is clear to me. Is eating 100% minimally processed, whole foods 100% of the time and banning anything considered junk food better for my health? From a physical standpoint, maybe. What about mentally, though? Not so great. Note that just because we have the OPTION to eat something doesnt mean we have to. (eg. At no point in time is anyone ever required to eat Poptarts to be considered a flexible dieter.) You can eat junk food in moderation every single day and be considered a flexible dieter. You can eat NO junk food whatsoever and be considered a flexible dieter. The key, you see, is that regardless of what we end up eating, we are actively making that choice for ourselves. Not because thats all were allowed to eat. Not because its on some meal plan. But never mind labels. Heres what I say: - Most of the time, eat food that nourishes your body. - Some of the time, allow yourself to indulge in moderation, and realize that no food is inherently good or bad. - Enjoy the shit out of your food.
