One of the frustrations I feel in looking ahead for our city’s future is that too often we feel to grasp the significance of individual steps or developments and how they impact our city and particularly our neighborhood. As a former newspaper columnist, I have to state that our local media has also done too much “political celebrity” reporting and not enough information for us to actually participate in the kind of city we are building and what it means for the future. It now appears that the 2015 mayor’s election also may not be an opportunity for that kind of citywide discussion. I wanted to share a recent Bill Moyers special about similar issues playing out in New York City that could just as easily be about San Francisco. I offer it as an opportunity for thought and discussion, not to create disputes. But I think we are all better off if we don’t let these issues slide past us, and then find out -- as some New Yorkers are learning -- that we can do too little and too late. The special also highlights a particular NY high-rise that is 90 stories tall at the end of Central Park. The new Transbay Tower (Salesforce Tower) will be 60 plus stories high. Bill Clinton once gave voice to an important observation. “A crowd,” Clinton said, “is a group of people where each person is pushing to get ahead. A community is also a group of people, but they are mindful that everyone does better if we work together instead of just for ourselves.
