One of the most common terms used in genetic research is SNP, or single nucleotide polymorphism. These are single base pair mutations that can result in a genetic disease or a change in phenotype. In recent years scientists have generated huge tables of SNP profiles in the human genome that can help determine a persons genetic predisposition to certain diseases. Researchers at the University of Konstanz have discovered a variant of the Thermus aquaticus DNA Polymerase used in PCR amplification that is more sensitive to SNPs’. The researchers used Sequencher DNA analysis software to evaluate the PCR generated DNA for replication errors.
