One of the most interesting studies of 2014 was titled, Which emotions last longest and why: The role of event importance and rumination The researchers gave the participants a list of 27 emotions and asked them to report, on average, how each one lasted. At the bottom of the scale were disgust, shame, and fear which passed within 40 minutes, but the clear leader was sadness, lasting 120 hours. In second place was hatred, 60 hours. The reason for the significant differences appears to be the length of rumination, which is focusing on the causes or consequences of the event, rather than on a solution. I would not be surprised if some cases of diagnosed depression are linked to extended rumination, where the feelings and thoughts associated with the sadness continue long past the 120 hours, due to continued reinforcement. These patients are unlikely to respond to psychopharmaceutical compounds, but should improve with a cognitive therapy. link.springer/article/10.1007%2Fs11031-014-9445-y
