One of the most notorious statements by an American politician in recent times was uttered by the Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, who declared that the number one priority of his party was to see President Obama fail. That open declaration of hostility to an elected president was strongly criticized by even members of his own party. In fact, the open admission that the Republicans would not be a responsible opposition working in the national interest but would instead focus on sabotaging the government proved disastrous for the party. It opened an easy attack line for the Democrats and helped Obama win re-election. The Republicans would be in good company in Kenya. Has there, in the nation’s 50 years of competitive politics, been a more ungracious set of losers than the Cord brigade? Forget their claims that they actually won the election. The Kenyan election had more observers than any other in recent African history. Not a single one – the European Union, the respected Carter Centre, the Americans, the African Union or the regional bodies – have emerged to suggest that Cord won the election.
