Only socialist system can save Nigeria – ASUU Nasir Fagge, the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) stated yesterday that Nigeria will “continue to be in ruins except it adopts the socialist system of government”. He called on Nigerians to demand for a socialist system of government, that “only a socialist welfare state can bring about the desired peace and prosperity”. Fagge after ASUU National Executive Council meeting in Calabar, Cross River State, said a socialist welfare state will creatively reconstruct Nigeria’s economic and political institutions to serve the welfare needs of Nigerians. “A socialist welfare state will creatively reconstruct Nigeria’s economic and political institutions to serve the welfare needs of Nigerians. It will remove the economic basis of the nation’s problem, promote freedom of religion in condition of equality of citizens and remove the basis of state plunder and terror. The very first step that is required to address the challenges which flow mostly from the character of thedynamics of global capitalism into which Nigeria is embedded is instituting a socialist welfare state in Nigeria. This first step will involve among other things, taking radical and effective measures to substantially elevate the welfare of the poor, liberally and generously,” he said. He continued; “Here, we have a responsibility to devise a Nigerian version of the welfare state to suit our cultural peculiarities and history. The transition to the socialist welfare state may be kick-started with an insistence by the civil society on strict adherence to the principles of ownership and control of the economy as well as the transparent management of the economy as reflected in the 1999 constitution and several other federal and state laws. “Structurally, there is need to adopt a developmental model that will make majority of the Nigerian people the key subjects (participants) and object (ends) of the development process in the face of aggressive intervention by agents of global capitalism,” he asserted.
