Opinion: Heres my take on the event centre. If this is such a wonderful opportunity for revenue generation, why not let private industry take on the project with no risk for us, the taxpayer? Generate income from the taxes and perhaps a deal such as receiving 5% of revenues? Approach a company such as Wal-Mart and offer them the opportunity to take on this project. If it is so beneficial for the community economically, Wal-Mart, who has removed millions of dollars from our economy, would jump at the chance to participate in a money-making operation. They could have the naming rights. And they could reap the economic benefits without risk to the taxpayer for such an expensive venture. Has the idea of approaching big industry to invest instead of taxpayers even been suggested or explored? Why havent private industry jumped on board to offer to build this centre? Probably because of the high risk of such a venture. Wouldnt building an event centre be a great way to give back to the community and make money? Unfortunately, the fact is that there is no guarantee of income generation. It seems to me we are gambling on this event centre and Im not sure gambling is an appropriate thing to do with taxpayer dollars. If it is built, and we do receive an AHL team, I will be in line to get seasons tickets as Im a huge hockey fan. Im just not sure if the city should be footing the bill if it fails...
