Opinion: It occurred to me that Clive Hughes Irish Artist may be recorded as similar to or a parallel equivalent to Thomas Hart Benton, a Missouri born artist who visited and worked for a time in Paris, finally rejecting de rigeuer art in favor of his own gift. He returned to Kansas City MO, did his congregationalist work, perceived, became friends with Harry Truman and Charles Banks Wilson. The three became friends and traveled together from Kansas City to Brentons home town of Neosho, MO celebrating the trip with libations galore. Benton was rejected by his home town, Neosho MO when he offered to paint a mural for the city as he had done for the U.S. Post office in Joplin, MO. All three men followed their passion rather than the herd mentality of their time. Jackson Pollack studied under or with Benton before he followed his action paintings that no one understood or appreciated very much at the time. Pollocks action paintings admirably predicted the current devolution of American society to fragmented sound bytes of too much politically correct information than the population of the flyover parts of America located between the Appalachians and the Sierra Nevada mountain ranges. Wilson archived images of Native Armericans, Truman refreshingly said the buck stops here meaning he assumed responsibility for his actions and Benton proceeded to do his own thing instead of follow the herd. To my mind, Clive Hughes is a contemporary example of the backbone necessary to pursue a gift with damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead attitude that can appeal to and document the beauty of the Spirit of Ireland. One might suppose that I admire the work of Clive Hughes. And I do. As do I respect the work of so many artists, both sung and unsung round the world. If I amd a list of them it would be a forever task. Most are my Facebook friends. tomedwards c. 0723.17.12.2014.
