#OrangutanCaringWeek Did you know that Bornean orangutans are endangered in the wild and Sumatran orangutans are considered critically endangered? According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN Red List), that means that there are between 45,000 and 69,000 individuals Bornean orangutans remaining and around 7,300 Sumatran orangutans left in the wild. Their biggest threat? Conversion of valuable rainforest into palm oil plants. You use palm oil daily since it’s in anything from soaps and cosmetics to ice cream and cereal. However, you can make a difference for the wild orangutan populations by becoming orangutan friendly consumers. Choose companies that use sustainable palm oil and that are striving to become members of the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil). If you’d like more information, please watch this short video from the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, which summarizes the palm oil crisis. www2.cmzoo.org/palmoilkit/Video%20Library/Make%20a%20difference%20for%20Wild%20Orangutan%202014.mp4
