Orchid Over 37,000 men in the UK will be diagnosed with testicular, prostate and penile cancer in the coming year. Of these men, 2,000 will be diagnosed with testicular cancer, 35,000 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 400 will be diagnosed with the rare penile cancer. Recognising the early warning signs and symptoms of these cancers, regular self checks, receiving an early diagnosis and treatment alongside regular exercise and a well balanced diet can make a real difference to the outcome for many men. Orchid is the UK’s only registered charity specialising in all three male cancers. Established in 1996 Orchid works to improve the lives of people affected by male cancers through a range of support services, a world class research programme, awareness and educational campaigns. Support Services - Orchid offers everyone affected by or interested in male cancer an extensive range of services. We offer an information service staffed by specialist Male Cancer Information Nurses, a portfolio of publications which are independently reviewed and evidence based, specialist Factsheets, research updates, an award winning DVD ‘Know Your Balls…Check Em Out’, resource packs, a dedicated website and newsletter. Our services are free of charge. A Pioneering, World Class Research Programme - our funding of innovative research in the cancer field is the focus of Orchid’s work. The research programme aims to encourage, support and fund research into the causes, prevention and treatment of male cancers. It has identified new ways to treat male cancers and improved our understanding of how these cancers behave. The four programmes of research include molecular biology and cancer genetics, histopathology, cancer epidemiology and clinical trials. In 2011 we appointed the first Orchid Chair in Male Genito-urinary Oncology. Since Orchid was founded, we have invested over £8 million in exceptional projects that are reviewed and approved by an independent Scientific Advisory Board. Education Campaigns and Raising Awareness - on a national level Orchid raises awareness of male cancers and educates men in the signs and symptoms of cancer. We work closely with healthcare professionals, other voluntary organisations, community groups and support networks, schools, universities and local companies to deliver education and health awareness programmes thereby ensuring men of all ages are well informed. Over the last 18 months we have also launched the Orchid Community Golf Programme and a series of Roadshows – bringing awareness of male cancer into the heart of the community. Throughout the year we deliver awareness and education campaigns to raise awareness of male cancer, the latest research developments and new treatments. The annual Orchid Male Cancer Awareness Week has quickly become a recognised campaign in the healthcare diary and is featured in national, regional, local and trade media. There were over 70 million opportunities to learn about male cancer and Orchid during the 2012 campaign. We work in partnership with other voluntary organisations and networks to campaign for improved services for men and their families including Cancer Research UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, British Association of Urological Nurses, British Association of Urological Surgeons, Penile Cancer Supra-networks, the Cancer Campaigning Group and Cancer 52.
