Origins of Cancer All cancers begin in cells, the bodys basic unit of life. To understand cancer, its helpful to know what happens when normal cells become cancer cells. The body is made up of many types of cells. These cells grow and divide in a controlled way to produce more cells as they are needed to keep the body healthy. When cells become old or damaged, they die and are replaced with new cells. However, sometimes this orderly process goes wrong. The genetic material (DNA) of a cell can become damaged or changed, producing mutations that affect normal cell growth and division. When this happens, cells do not die when they should and new cells form when the body does not need them. The extra cells may form a mass of tissue called a tumor. I was thinking the other day about the thoughts in our minds and memory banks. Surely there comes a time for stale, obsolete and useless thinking to die off and be replaced with new thoughts and attitudes? I often sit and listen to what is spoken at any given gathering of people. And I see all kinds of tumors as people share their fears, disappointments, dislikes, and complaints, and no matter how hard you try to swing the topic of conversation towards peace, love or harmony, these tumors have a way of flaring up again and again to dominate the mood of the gathering. This got me thinking about how even our thoughts can become cancerous if we are not careful. One small word taken the wrong way, or spoken with the wrong motive or tone, can and most often mutates and multiplies into what can turn out into devastating, and destructive consequences. I realised this week that my thoughts do two things. Firstly they process what I hear, and secondly they shape what I say. Behind every expression or manifestation of negative or destructive behavior from my human nature, I believe can be traced back to one solitary warped, mutated thought process that rebels against the authority and sovereignty of God over my life. These cancerous thoughts hide in things like jealousy, envy, pride, anger, unforgivness..... To name but a few..... Romans 7:21-25 NIV [21] So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. [22] For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; [23] but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. [24] What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? [25] Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.
