Our proposal: Instead of a sinking fund millage, which is limited - TopicsExpress

Our proposal: Instead of a sinking fund millage, which is limited to only buildings and building projects, we would support the school seeking a hold harmless millage of 3.5 mills (most voters we have spoken to will support no more than 3.5 mills). But as a condition to that millage, the Board of Education must pass a formal resolution, signed by the superintendent, spelling out how that revenue will be spent. Voters have told us that half (around $650,000 based on last years estimate) should go directly to students and student programs like elementary music, the liaison officer, eliminating pay to play sports, weekend sports transportation restored, perhaps across the board reduction in school lunch by 20%, and busing for at least 9th and 10th grades. Voters will support this knowing its directly helping our students! The other half of this revenue (around $650,000 a year) will then go to Buildings and Maintenance with needed projects clearly defined in the resolution. This will add value to our district, it will give us something we can SELL to increase student enrollment, or at the very least stop our enrollment losses as parents take their kids elsewhere. It isnt any more complicated than that. And if we only approve this millage for 2 years at a time, it gives We The District more control over accountability of that revenue. Currently they want approval of the sinking fund for 9 years. And with elections coming up in Nov., them honoring their agreement will certainly be in their best interest. This was proposed and ignored in August when the sinking fund was defeated with 931 no votes, we hope to propose it again in May.
