Our team monitors the TOR:CON. So what is TOR:CON? It is a scale of 1-10 developed by The Weather Channel to indicate the probability of a tornado within a given geographic area. Multiply the TOR:CON number by 10 for the percentage chance of a tornado (e.g., TOR:CON 5 = 50% chance). With a high TOR:CON (7-10 range), we make preparations in case something does occur (prep the trailers, put resources on notice, etc). While major tornados typically occur within a high TOR:CON, it does not mean a major tornado will necessarily develop or occur in a populated area. For reference, Moore had a TOR:CON of 7, Joplin was an 8 and the AL outbreak was an unprecedented 10. In addition to TOR:CON, we also place high value on NOAA / National Weather Service information. We rely on our resources nationwide to help us in determining hard hit areas, as well at news outlets, social media and NOAA. Twitter often gives us our first glimpse into a situation, but it isnt always the most reliable source. However, it does provide the quickest reports of damage and photos. We use Twitter for our first insights, but follow up with official news sources and/or contacts in the area to confirm.
