Outdoor come command continued: Park, Woods, Bike Trail: When your dog is not secured by a fence he or she should always be on a leash for safety. Once you have become confident in your dog’s recall you may opt to spend time at parks or in the woods off leash, however this is always risky as it could lead to injury to your dog or others. Until you’re confident in your dog’s recall you can practice come in public areas by using a long lead. Leads can be purchased that are up to 50’ long. Returning to you should have a positive association so you should plan on recalling the dog several times before you leave. For example: you give the “come” command, the dog comes, gets some love and a treat and then you throw a ball and let him run, you give the “come” command again, love, treats, and let him go explore again, the final time command, love, treats, a quick game of tug keeping the dog close, then go to the car to return home. Say the dog’s name and “come”. As soon as the dog reacts by looking in your direction begin praising and continue praising as the dog moves to you. If the dog looks at you and then looks away again say “ah-ah” and re-issue the command, begin praising when she begins moving towards you. If the dog doesn’t begin moving toward you, go to the dog and reduce the leash length to 3-4 feet and begin walking (like a “normal boring” walk). When walking the dog, do not scold the dog simply ignore it. After 5-10 minutes of walking, let out the lead and let the dog begin playing again, then try the command again. If the dog begins moving toward you but then gets distracted and begins moving away from you say “ah-ah” and re-issue the command. Only re-direct the dog once or twice and then if he fails to comply go to the dog and reduce the leash length to 3-4 feet and begin walking (like a “normal boring” walk). When walking the dog, do not scold the dog simply ignore it. After 5-10 minutes of walking, let out the lead and let the dog begin playing again, then try the command again. If the dog is still refusing to comply after several attempts, end the park visit and plan on trying again another day. “Come” is not optional, non-compliance ends fun time. **Letting your dog run off-leash has many risks and liabilities and as such this page does not endorse or encourage this.
