Owen (OCA2) got glasses today and heres what we picked out! why dont they make tortoise-shell frames for babies? Ive seen them for toddlers but not itty bitty babes. theyll be done on Friday I think. I didnt get the transitional lenses but she did tell me if his prescription is correct then she can make special dark lenses for his sunglasses that we already have. ALSO, if anyone wants an update, we finally saw Dr. Granet! he was just as wonderful as everyone made him out to be! I cannot stress enough what a HUGE difference finding a good pediatric opthalmologist was. Our last one told me she couldnt tell me what Owens vision was, and it wouldnt make a difference. She had no game plan, it was just lets wait and see where hes at around 12-18 months. Frustrating! And yet when we saw Dr. Granet he checked owens prescription right away so we could order glasses. World of a difference. Glasses might help significantly or they might help just a teeny bit, but were grateful to be headed in the right direction to help him see better! he is double farsighted, which surprised me. (anyone have any idea what that means? his prescription is +2.5 and +3.) Dr. Granet also explained nystagmus in further detail to us, which was really, really helpful. For anyone wondering, he told us it doesnt bother owen at all (his brain compensates for the movement and makes it so he doesnt even know his own eyes are moving) and it will just mean he might process things a tiny bit slower because his eyes dont see as fast as our eyes do, because theyre constantly moving. (for example, our normal eyes can decipher youre holding a blue pen in less than 1/3 second, but with nystagmus it might take 2/3 or 1 full second for the brain to connect with the eyes.) we also confirmed his right eye is starting to turn inward (strabismus) so were optimistic that the glasses will correct that. dr. granet helped me realize (a light bulb went on!) that its not just poor vision that owen struggles with, but a combination of nystagmus (where his eyes shift back and forth uncontrollably) and photophobia (where he is ultra-sensitive to light and glare) as well. put all three things together and its a handful! but weve got a game plan and I feel so good about how things are going. he was really helpful in feeding us all the information wed ever want to know right now. he made me feel like it was GOOD to ask so many questions! sometimes I feel like people tell me not to worry but its just in our nature as mothers to worry, right? I worry about ALL of my kids. :) He told us dont rush it, but before we know it, well have learned what we need to learn, and well just say, well thats Owen! instead of questioning whether something is affected by his albinism or not. Hope this helps some new mamas starting out. (Ha! Were super new too, though. Owen is only 6 months old.)
