P.G Entrance 2014 (M.A/M.Sc Mathematics and M.Sc Botany) | KU pulls up paper setter, Seeks Explanation Kashmir Student, Mar 18: The University of Kashmir has sought an explanation from an academician, who set ambiguous paper in this year’s Post Graduate entrance examination for Mathematics subject, forcing the administration to cancel near a dozen questions. The cancellation of questions has once again exposed a deeply-flawed mechanism of paper setting in place at Kashmir’s highest seat of learning, said a research scholar at KU. At least nine questions were cancelled in the Mathematics paper, and six questions changed in Botany paper, according to answer keys issued by the University on its website. Dean Academic Affairs, Prof A M Shah said: “We have sought an explanation from the academic who had set the paper. Serious action will be taken against him.” He said the University cancelled questions after widespread complaints from candidates. “We had constituted a committee to see into the issue. It is an utter negligence on part of the paper setter and he would be taken to task,” he said. Even in 2013, the University had constituted expert committees to look into the issue of ‘wrong questions’ in entrance test papers of various postgraduate programmes. The University had, in more than a dozen programmes, cancelled or deleted questions after being found “out of the syllabus” or “above standard.” The issue of cancellation of questions and furnishing of wrong answer keys in examinations is seen as a major setback to the competitivenessof students appearing in these cut-throat examinations. The State High Court said on Thursday that setting “ambiguous and doubtful questions” in entrance examinations confuse students and ultimately affect their merit position. The Court was referring to furnishing of wrong answer keys by the J&K Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE). The division bench of Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar and Justice Tashi Rabstan observed that the authority should leave no room for wrong answer keys as “it adversely affects the merit of competing candidates.”
