P r e s s Release RE-CONSTRUCTION OF A MOSAIC curated by Lucie Drdova with works by Asgar/Gabriel, Oliver Dorfer, Daniel Vlček and Vladimir Skrepl Opening: October 10th, 2013, 7pm Exhibition on show through December 7th, 2013 Painting as a historical expression of human creativity carries in itself the characteristics of hegemonic western cultural representation. Working with the reality of the image, i.e. the artwork as an essential matter and impulse for a combinatorics issuing in multi-layered stories with a rich network of allusions to diverse layers of European cultural memory, is based on a strong faith in a shared and always communicable content of highly informed painting. The contemporary form of visual knowledge; an abundant archive; assumes sense through our perception skills, or rather through our identity in relation to the social order, experience and knowledge. Identities have a specific function as symbolic forms structuring this knowledge and creating coherence. The forming of identity is in its essence a moral and political phenomenon, and as such cannot be reduced to the mediation of pure knowledge of the realities of the world. In the sense of Foucault’s dispositif, if the abstraction of this concept is maintained to a certain degree, one can refer to the heterogeneous mechanisms in the sense of “multilinear ensemble” [Gilles Deleuze, What is a dispositif?, 1988] conceiving and transforming human beings into objects in a process in which the “dimension of power” plays the key part. The four diverse painting positions and conceptually different approaches show the strength of image reality and the fullness of the individual accounts which can be seen as variable knowledge of others as well as of ourselves. To be more precise, identity is not discovered but constructed by the dynamic process of production of knowledge.
