PARVOVIRUS OUTBREAK!!! There has been an outbreak of Parvovirus in the district. Over the last 2 weeks we have attended to several cases of this virus. Parvovirus is a highly contagious virus and is spread by oral or nasal contact with contaminated faeces or contaminated environment. It is extremely resistant to the environment and can survive on objects such as clothing, shoes, floors and soil for up to 5months or longer. If your dog is infected with the virus clinical signs usually appear with 7-10 days. Initial signs include: • Loss of appetite • Severe vomiting • Diarrhoea (becoming bloody) • Dehydration • Weakness Approximately 95% of dogs suffering from Parvovirus will die. VACCINATION is the most effective way to prevent the infection against Parvovirus. Puppies between the ages of 6 to 20 weeks are the most at risk. One vaccination is not sufficient. Ensure your puppy receives its full vaccination course and DO NOT take your puppy to public places until 10 days after its final vaccination.
